After three years of transition, the last drop of fossil oil has been used at Adven’s backup district heating plant Lastaren, located in Avesta, Sweden. With bio-oil and wood pellets in the tanks, the plant is now carbon neutral and completely free from fossil oil.
Adven Sweden, part of Adven Group, is a leading provider of energy and water solutions in the Nordic and Baltic countries
The main heat production in Avesta takes place at the Källhagen heat plant, which supplies heat to about 1,500 customers using a mix of waste and biomass fuels.
For a long time, the Lastaren backup plant ran on fossil oil. To lower its climate impact, Adven has invested in building a new pellet-fired boiler and converting the existing oil boilers to run on bio-oil.
The facility now runs entirely on renewable fuels.
Today, we are celebrating progress in sustainability. It feels right that Avesta and Adven dare to invest and believe in society’s transition, said Blerta Krenzi, Chair of the municipal board in Avesta, in her address during the opening ceremony held on May 13, 2025.
The transition is part of Adven’s broader effort to shift all district heating production to renewable and recovered fuels in Sweden latest 2030.
Being able to invest and make this backup plant in Avesta completely renewable feels great. It brings us closer to our goal of running all district heating with renewable and recovered energy, said Henrik Johansson Casimiro, CEO of Adven Sweden.
The switch to renewable fuels reduces the Lastaren heat plant’s annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by around 2,000–4,000 tonnes. The carbon-neutral backup plant now stands ready to supply heat when demand is at its highest.
It is clearly a step forward for district heating in Avesta and something we take great pride in as the team running the plant, said Johan Boström, Operations & Maintenance Manager at Adven in Avesta.
