Amec Foster Wheeler to supply biomass CFB boiler to Lahti Energia Kymijärvi III

Amec Foster Wheeler has recently announced that it has been awarded a contract by Lahti Energia Oy for the design, supply and assembly of a 158 MW thermal circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) steam generator plant for the new biomass-fired heating plant, Kymijärvi III in Lahti, Finland.

UK-headed global energy, chemical, and infrastructure technology provider Amec Foster Wheeler announced April 11 that it has been awarded a contract by Lahti Energia Oy, a Finnish municipality-owned energy supplier, for the design, supply and assembly of a circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) steam generator plant for the new biomass-fired heating plant, Kymijärvi III in Lahti, Finland.

– For many years, Lahti Energia has successfully utilised Amec Foster Wheeler technologies and services at the Kymijärvi power plant. Our journey will now continue and we are very pleased to have been selected to deliver this state-of-the-art CFB boiler island for the Kymijärvi III-project. The boiler is designed to meet today’s stringent environmental requirements and provide cleaner energy to the city, said Tomas Harju-Jeanty, President, Amec Foster Wheeler Energia Group in a statement.

Multi-fuel capabilities

Under the contract, the value of which is estimated to be in the region of EUR 60 million of the approximately EUR 165 million project investment, Amec Foster Wheeler will deliver the 158 MW thermal CFB unit with flue gas cleaning and other auxiliary equipment including assembly and commissioning.

The multi-fuel steam generator will be designed to burn up to 100 percent biomass, which will consist mainly of wood chips from forest residues and forest industry by-products. It is also designed to use peat and coal as additional and/or alternative fuels.

– The Kymijärvi III bio-heating plant is a big step towards carbon-free energy production not only for Lahti Energia but also for the City of Lahti. This investment will provide strong support for the local economy and employment as part of the domestic fuel supply chain. The smooth execution of construction is very important for us. For that reason, we are very pleased to work with a well-known contractor like Amec Foster Wheeler, said Eero Seesvaara, Managing Director of Lahti Energia.

Heat recovery

Estimated to begin plant testing in mid-2019, the new plant will replace the aging coal-fired Kymijärvi I plant. It will also have a state-of-the-art flue gas condensation with combustion air humidification heat recovery system and condensate cleaning unit bringing the water quality to make-up quality.

To be supplied by Radscan Intervex AB, a Swedish company specialised in flue gas condensation, the entire flue gas heat recovery unit is expected to recover 30 – 45 MW of heat and reduce the overall consumption of raw water. According to Lahti Energia, it also enables the project to qualify for an environment investment grant worth EUR 3 million.
