Circa commissions Technip Energies for ReSolute plant next stage engineering
Norway-based sustainable biochemicals company Circa Group AS has announced that it has engaged the Netherlands-headed construction, engineering, and technology major Technip Energies N.V., to conduct pre-engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) phase work as the next step in the execution stage of the ReSolute plant in France.
ReSolute is a EUR 23 million EU Horizon 2020 flagship project, coordinated by Association Industries et Agro-Ressources in France, to create bio-based levoglucosenone (LGO), a chemical building block that can be used to produce bio-based solvent Cyrene in one step.
Cyrene is a bio-based alternative to traditional commercial fossil-based solvents such as NMP, DCM, and DMF, which are under regulatory pressure worldwide due to their toxicity. With a unique property set, including viscosity, surface tension, and polarities, Cyrene can be used to produce a range of advanced materials.
Technip Energies is pleased and proud to have been chosen by Circa for this stage of the ReSolute project. Technip Energies has the skills and resources to immediately engage on the project and we look forward to delivering a successful outcome for Circa, said Pierre Pettex, Commercial Director, Sustainable Chemistry & Biofuels, Technip Energies.
The contract with Technip Energies deliberately overlaps the basic engineering design stage currently managed by Wood Consulting and has the main objectives of:
- maintaining the project schedule as the project starts early-stage engineering;
- construction activities on-site, specifically those of site preparation, and readiness of buildings. It also allows for a head start of detail engineering and ordering of long-lead items (LLIs).
The commercial-scale ReSolute plant is being located at the Carling Saint-Avold platform site owned by TotalEnergies (previously Total) in Eastern France and expected to reach a production capacity of 1 000 tonnes of Cyrene per annum, using feedstock from non-food renewable biomass making it the first of its kind in the European Union (EU).
The agreement with Technip Energies is another major milestone in the construction of the ReSolute plant. With the ongoing concerns over the impact of Covid-19, the contract specifically has been designed to bring forward a number of activities that will deliver potential time savings should the virus impact the project in the future, commented Dr Ebbe Dommisse, Chief Operations Officer, Circa Group.
