Sulapac launches microplastic free bio-based barrier for water-based products

Finnish sustainable packaging developer Sulapac Oy has launched what it says is a ground-breaking innovation. Now, water-based products such as cosmetics can be packaged using a new patent-pending bio-based barrier that biodegrades without leaving permanent microplastics behind.

Sulapac has launched a new patent-pending bio-based barrier solution for the packaging of water-based cosmetics that biodegrades without leaving permanent microplastics behind (photos courtesy Sulapac).

According to Sulapac, the beauty and personal care sector is estimated to be US$500 billion per annum industry and the market is expected to grow annually by 4.75 percent. Cosmetic brand forerunners have eagerly been looking for sustainable packaging solutions.

At the same time, around 90 percent of the cosmetics market consists of water-based emulsions, for which there has not been a packaging alternative that biodegrades without leaving permanent microplastics behind.

To address this, Sulapac has developed a patent-pending bio-based barrier material that apart from being fully sustainable, fits industry standard requirements.

The complete package

The Sulapac Barrier test results have been remarkable having measured an average weight loss of 1.3 percent in a Sulapac 4-part jar with emulsion in 40°C, over 12 weeks – compared to the industry standard average of 3 percent.

Full turnkey packaging support

Sulapac is also launching a new flexible material designed for thin-walled jars with excellent impact strength. It has a low carbon footprint based on eco-design, climate-conscious raw materials, and cost-efficient, high-volume manufacturing. Combined with the Sulapac barrier, it provides a compelling portfolio of different-sized jars for both oil and water-based cosmetics.

Sulapac has made sure that the switch from conventional plastics is as easy as possible. The drop-in solution material can be mass-produced with the existing plastic machinery, and also provides support throughout the process as a turnkey solution.

Currently, the ideal way to recycle a product made of Sulapac material is via industrial composting. It biodegrades without leaving permanent microplastics behind.

Mechanical and chemical recycling are also viable options, and Sulapac is developing a closed-loop system. The Take Back Sulapac pilot will be launched in the near future.
