Green Genius commissions new biogas plant in Belarus and plans for two more
Green Genius, a renewable energy company that is part of Lithuania-headed Modus Group, has announced that it has successfully commissioned a new 1 MW biogas power plant in Belarus, its seventh plant in the country to date.
According to the company, over EUR 5 million was invested in this project, a 1 MW biogas power plant is located in Brest Region. The funding for this project was provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
We have established ourselves as a strong biogas project developer in Belarus – seven of our biogas plants are operating here. The rapid growth of livestock farming in the country creates favourable conditions to develop biogas projects, therefore, we will continue growing our business in this market. We are planning to start the construction of two more biogas plants this quarter in Minsk and Grodno districts, said Ruslanas Sklepovičius, CEO of Green Genius and Modus Group Board Member responsible for renewable energy business area.
A biogas plant with a total power of 1 MW is located near one of the biggest pig complexes in the country. To produce green power, the newly built biogas power plant will use approximately 250 000 tonnes of organic waste from the pig complex annually to generate approximately 8 GWh of clean electricity.
New biogas power plant not only will generate green energy but also neutralize odour from the pig farm and convert organic waste to liquid odourless fertilizer. In this way biogas power plants contribute to the implementation of the principles of circular economy and create positive impact for the environment and local communities, said Paulius Babrauskas. Head of Green Genius Biogas Division.
Building European biogas and solar portfolio
Currently, Green Genius operates seven biogas power plants in Belarus with a total capacity of 8 MW. Each year they will supply more than 64 GWh of green energy to the country.
Green Genius is developing renewable energy – solar PV and biogas – projects in six European markets: Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Spain, and Italy. The company is also actively looking for opportunities to expand in other Central European countries.
The total installed power capacity of Green Genius projects currently exceeds 100 MW. According to the company’s estimations, these projects allow saving around 170 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) every year. By 2025, the total capacity of implemented renewable energy projects by Green Genius is expected to reach 1.5 GW.
