BioHauki Oy has inaugurated a new biogas and upgrading plant in Haukivuori, Finland. Held August 22, the opening was officiated by the Finnish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Jari Leppä who performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The BioHauki plant, which has been in operation for a number of months, was supplied by compatriot BioGTS Oy, a biogas and biodiesel technology supplier. The technology used is based on the plug-flow principle and biogas production is based on the dry anaerobic digestion technique.
The biogas produced is upgraded to transportation fuel and organic fertilizers are generated from the agricultural residues. Farmers have been continuously bringing the feedstock to the biogas plant, and the first organic fertilizer loads have already been utilized by farmers. The treatment capacity of the biogas plant is about 8 000 tonnes per annum of agricultural residues.
About 700 000 Nm3 of biogas will be generated at the BioHauki biogas plant and upgraded to biomethane most of which is for transportation fuel with the balance to be used for district heating.

Biomethane for transportation is available at the Haukivuori refueling station and soon it will also be available by in the Graani shopping mall in Mikkeli. Rautiainen remarked that he was positively surprised by the number of biogas car owners using the BioHauki refueling station.
Finnish biogas car owners have received the refueling station with a positive attitude, and even some of the foreign biogas car owners have been seen refueling their passenger cars at Biohauki, he said.
