In May, the 40 MWe Brigg Renewable Energy Plant (BREP) was officially opened by Cllr. Trevor Foster, North Lincolnshire Mayor in the presence of local, national and European dignitaries. Operational since the end of January three months ahead of schedule, it is currently the largest dedicated straw fired biomass plant in the UK and owned by BWSC North Lincs Ltd (BNLL). BNLL is a Danish joint venture (JV) between PensionDanmark, Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC) and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). The GBP 162 million investment is based on biomass energy technology supplied by BWSC under a turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract. BWSC is also responsible for operation and maintenance (O&M) of the plant under a 15-year O&M agreement.
The core of the Brigg plant is the vibrating grate fired boiler supplied by Burmeister & Wain Energy A/S (BWE) a Denmark-based combustion specialist now part of the Italian STF Group. The BWE supply also includes the straw feeding system and the Selective Non Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) DeNOx system.
