New biofuel-boilers secure lactose-free production for Arla

To facilitate the rapid expansion of Nordic dairy major Arla's production of lactose-free products at its facility in Jönköping, Sweden, municipal energy company Jönköping Energi will install a new biomass-fired steam boiler.
"This is a collaboration that focuses on sustainability that benefits both parties," said Christoffer Ohlander, business engineer and responsible for the project at Jönköping Energi.

Arla’s operations in Jönköping are expanding. It is above all the increase in demand for lactose-free products that is the reason for the new investments. The new production of lactose-free products requires process steam which will be supplied by Jönköping Energi from a new biomass-fired steam boiler.

We can streamline our existing production to Arla at the same time as the investment helps them take the step to a completely fossil-free production in Jönköping, said  Christoffer Ohlander.

Set-up temporary bio-oil fired boilers

Jönköping Energi has previously delivered hot water to Arla which is used in its production. To get started with the new lactose-free production line quickly, Jönköping Energi had set up two temporary steam boilers that are fired with bio-oil.

With the new agreement, the temporary boilers will be replaced by two new biomass boilers that will be built and operated by Jönköping Energi.

Arla needs steam without interruption. This places demands on a high level of operational reliability, which has been one of the most important parameters in the work. We have helped Arla get started quickly with its new production line by producing steam with two temporary boilers that are fired with bio-oil, said Christoffer Ohlander.

Demand for Arla’s lactose-free products with a long shelf life has increased steadily, not only in Sweden but throughout Europe. The collaboration between Jönköping Energi and Arla has been going on for a long time and even when the first plant was in operation, it was clear that Arla needed to expand its production.

Everything has gone very fast and when we were given the task of expanding our production of lactose-free products, Jönköping Energi was able to respond by starting the delivery of steam required for production. Jönköping Energi is a confident partner with extensive experience that will work with its core business while we can focus ours, said Ola Allvin, Senior PTD Manager at Arla.
