Pulverized pellet heat plant to Helsinki

Finnish energy utility Helen Oy has revealed it has selected global forest and energy industry technology major Valmet to supply a wood pellet fired heating plant to its Salmisaari power plant in Helsinki. The district heating capacity of the plant will be 92 MW with start-up expected to take place at the beginning of 2018 and order value is in excess of EUR 20 million. At capacity it will use 21 tonnes of wood pellets per hour. The pellets are pulverized and burned in the burners of the boiler. Valmet will supply the heating plant as a total delivery, which includes fuel conveyors from the existing storage silos, wood pellet grinding and the wood dust equipment, hot water boiler and flue gas cleaning by way of a bag hose filter. In addition, Valmet will supply the plant construction, electrification and its DNA automation system. Helen will be in charge of the construction of the foundation.

– In designing the Salmisaari wood pellet plant we have been able to utilize the experiences gained in earlier, similar projects. The plant fulfills the tightening environmental requirements by utilizing a low-NOx burner technique and efficient dust removal. Both residential grade and industrial grade pellets can be utilized as fuel at the plant, said Kai Mäenpää, Vice President, Energy Sales and Services Operations, Valmet.
