The European Investment Bank (EIB) granted an EUR 50 million loan to a subsidiary of Greenalia S.A. to finance a new 50 MW biomass-fired power plant being built in Galicia, Spain (photo courtesy Greenalia).

According to Valmet, the delivery consists of a biomass-fired HYBEX power boiler plant featuring bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) technology. The thermal power capacity of the boiler is 130 MW, and electricity capacity of the plant is 50 MW.

The delivery also includes auxiliary equipment and supporting structures. The biomass power plant’s takeover is scheduled for January 2020. The value of the order has not been disclosed.

We chose Valmet to supply the boiler plant based on the company’s proven and efficient technology. Our good cooperation started already in the sales and pre-engineering stage, said Manuel García, CEO at Greenalia.

The power plant will use forest biomass, mainly eucalyptus and pine, and will contribute to the maintenance of forests in the area and the prevention of fires, encouraging the collection of small-sized wood waste that is normally discarded for industrial use. The Curtis-Teixeiro plant will increase the generation of energy from renewable sources, thereby contributing to the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Valmet has wide experience in the biofuels that the new plant will use. We look forward to continuing our good and fruitful cooperation with the power plant owner Greenalia and the EPC contractor ACCIONA-Imasa, said Kai Janhunen, Vice President, Energy Business Unit at Valmet.
