Jumpstart is an initiative of the Netherlands-headed dairy cooperative major FrieslandCampina and facilitates dairy farmers who want to realize mono-manure digesters plants on their own dairy farm.
Microferm is the name of the anaerobic digestion (AD) technology concept developed by HoSt specifically designed for dairy farmers who want to process manure. Depending on the size of the farm, the electrical capacity ranges between 60 and 150 kW.
The Stokman family from Koudum, province of Friesland and the Haarman family from Blokzijl, province of Overijssel are the latest dairy farm entrepreneurs who have chosen for HoSt manure biogas plants through the Jumpstart programme.
They are the second and third Microferm biomethane installations respectively that HoSt will supply turnkey as part of the Jumpstart initiative.
It is a good thing that a follow-up of the first Jumpstart projects is now happening. A manure-to-biomethane project on this small scale is feasible and profitable thanks to the proven techniques of HoSt and the Jumpstart organization, said a satisfied Sjaak Klein Gunnewiek, Biogas Sales Manager at HoSt.
Innovative dairy farmer
For the Stokman family, the project is key in the overall ambition of becoming a better dairy farm when it comes to animal welfare, nature, and the environment.
For example, the family company is conducting food additives experiments to reduce methane emissions. In addition, the cows have the freedom to choose when they go outside or stay indoors.
The cows graze in the meadows that are maintained fully ecologically. Sustainable pasture management ensures a herb-rich grassland around the meadows and fields, which in turn ensures successful grassland bird management.
The pinnacle of entertainment for the Stokman’s cows: climbing the playing hill and bathing in the unique ‘JaKoeZie’, a large outdoor variant on the jacuzzi – ‘koe’ is Dutch for a cow.
