In mid-October Valmet hosted an event that gave a glimpse into what its sees moving forward. Leveraging on the industrial Internet of Things (IoT) is one such development.
Finland-headed Valmet recently held a “Customer Days” event in Stockholm, Sweden. It was full-blown conference with a programme that could rival many a bioenergy conference in terms of content. Then again the company is a leading global supplier of technology, automation and services provider to energy and forest industries with its biomass and multi-fuel energy plant systems finding favour around the world. Big data changes everything
According to key note speaker Martin Willcox, Director, Big Data Centre of Excellence, Teradata Corp., “big data changes everything” and he provided a whirlwind of examples and progressions from both business to consumer and business to business in his address. Not least the subtle but significant difference in challenges between the consumer Internet of Things (IoT) and industrial IoT.
– The challenge of consumer IoT is the instrumenting of the things, whereas industrial things are already instrumented. But the data is used mostly for anomaly detection and control, not optimisation and prediction, which provide the greatest value, explained Willcox.
In the ensuing panel discussion Pasi Laine, President and CEO for Valmet discussed industrial Internet of Things (IoT) and how Valmet is leveraging on this while differing on some of the layman terminology used.
