Södra begins production at new Långasjö pellet line
In Sweden, forest owners association Södra has invested in a new pellet line at its sawmill in Långasjö. The SEK 20 million (≈ EUR 1.9 million) investment will increase the total annual production of pellets at Långasjö by 10 000 tonnes.
To meet the increased demand for pellets, Södra has begun commercial production of pellets on a new line at its Långasjö sawmill. Work on the line began during spring 2018 and plant commissioning began just before the end of 2018. The first pellet delivery from the new line is expected to be made during the following week.
Pellets is a future product and an obvious alternative in switching to sustainable energy solutions. Swedish small and medium-sized industry is investing in pellets, said Fredrik Tärneberg, Sales Manager for Energy Products at Södra.
Demand is coming mainly from the Swedish industry, which is replacing oil with pellets. The pellets heat as oil and are directly exchangeable for oil. Another new area of application and the new “in thing” in equestrian circles is to use pellets as litter in horse boxes.
Previously, straw was used, which was then spread on fields. This is not permitted anymore, instead, the straw must be disposed of so other solutions become interesting. Our pellets are made of 100 percent spruce and without any additives, which makes it excellent to use as horse bedding. We have also noted an increase in pellet stoves, said Fredrik Tärneberg.
