Suez wins Mumbai wastewater treatment plant contract

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), India has awarded Suez the contract to design, build and operate the Colaba Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) as part of its infrastructure development programme to meet population growth.

Suez, the France-headed global waste- and water management company has been awarded a “design, build and operate” wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) contract by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), India.  The contract is for the design and build of the Colaba Wastewater Treatment facility followed by 15 years of operation and estimated to be worth EUR 42 million for Suez.

Mumbai currently has a population of around 15 million. Over the last few decades it has seen intense urbanisation and population growth resulting in increasing pressure on water resources. The existing 1 500 km sewage infrastructure network collects 1.7 million m3 per day and is not enough to treat the increasing quantity of sewage water. To address this, MCGM has launched the Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project (MSDP) Stage-II Master Plan that covers the development of wastewater treatment and facilities by 2025 to meet projected flows. The newly awarded 37 000 m3 per day Colaba WWTP contract is part of MCGM’s programme.
