2017 a record year for Swiss pellet producers and consumers

2017 was the most successful year for wood pellets in Switzerland ever. More pellet heating systems were sold than in the previous year and so the demand for wood pellets also increased. Fortunately for Swiss producers, the domestic production of pellets also increased according to figures from proPellets Switzerland.

According to proPellets Switzerland, 2017 was a record year for Swiss pellet consumption and domestic production such as Tschopp Holzindustrie, the largest pellet producer in Switzerland.

Pellet heating systems had a good year in 2017. Around 16 percent more pellet-fired heating systems were sold than in the previous year. More heating systems in use mean more pellets consumed and wood pellet sales 2017 were up 8 percent on 2016 reaching around 280 000 tonnes.

According to proPellets Switzerland, over 70 percent or 196 000 tonnes was supplied by Swiss producers, which had 15 percent higher production compared to 2016. As pellets displace heating oil in residential heating, the association estimates that 135 million litres of heating oil equating to around 370 000 tonnes of fossil carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were avoided.

In doing so pellets make a valuable and important contribution to the achievement of Switzerland’s climate goals.
