Jepuan Biokaasu selects Malmberg for second biogas upgrading unit

Sweden-headed wastewater treatment and biogas technology providers MalmbergGruppen AB has announced that its subsidiary Malmberg Water AB (Malmberg) has been selected by the Finnish biogas producer Jepuan Biokaasu Oy (Jeppo Biogas) to supply a biogas upgrading unit. The order is the second delivery to Jepuan Biokassu and the fifth to Finland for Malmberg.

Founded in 2013, Jepuan Biokaasu (Jeppo biogas) processes about 130 000 tonnes of raw material per year and the annual production of biogas is 30 GWh. Most of the raw material comes from the food and agricultural industries. The company has ordered its second biogas upgrading unit from Malmberg (photo courtesy Jepuan Biokassu).

According to a statement, the order is for a Malmberg Compact GR BAS 3, a water-scrubber type unit with a capacity to upgrade 600 Nm3 per hour of biogas to biomethane (aka renewable natural gas – RNG). The upgraded gas will be used for heat production and as fuel for road transportation fuel.

We are delighted to be able to deliver a new biogas upgrade plant to Jeppo Biogas. Being close to our customers and ensuring that they are satisfied and that their business is sustainable even in the long term is central to us. Therefore, we will continue to evolve to ensure that we have the most attractive offer for our customers throughout the life of the facility, said Andre Carlsson, Business Area Manager Biogas at Malmberg.

The unit is planned to be put into operation in Jepua (Jeppo) north of Vaasa in western Finland in early winter 2020.

Now, after six years of practically trouble-free operation of our first water scrubber from Malmberg, we can confidently look forward to expanding our capacity with scrubber no. 2 from them. When we weighed the various factors’ risk factors and variability in operating and maintenance costs, we could see that our previously known water scrubbing technology was, overall, clearly at the forefront. There is also valuable security in the fact that Malmberg, actively on-line monitors the performance of the facilities, and thus can give us valuable control to optimize operations, said Kurt Stenvall, CEO, Jepuan Biokaasu.
