Velocys FT technology selected for Japanese e-fuels project

UK-headed Velocys plc a sustainable fuels technology company has announced that its Fischer-Tropsch (FT) technology has been selected for a Japanese e-fuels project by Toyo Engineering Corporation (TOYO) and its consortium of five leading Japanese companies. E-fuels are a promising set of sustainable fuels, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), synthesized from hydrogen that is generated with renewable power and carbon dioxide (CO2) that is captured from existing sources or the atmosphere.

In Japan, a project consortium consisting of Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS), Toyo Engineering Corporation (TOYO), Toshiba Corporation, Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd., Japan CCS Co., Ltd., and All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd (ANA) have announced that their joint proposal for a “Regional CO2 Resource Utilization Study Business Through Electrolysis Utilizing Artificial Photosynthesis Technology” has been adopted as a commissioned project by the Ministry of the Environment (graphic courtesy TOYO).

Alongside TOYO, the other five participating companies include Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS), Toshiba Corporation, Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd., Japan CCS Co., Ltd., and All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd (ANA). These six companies are being commissioned by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment to commence a demonstration project.

The ultimate goal of the electro-fuels project is the commercialisation of a sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) supply chain based on carbon recycling and regional revitalization through carbon dioxide (CO2) recycling.

According to Velocys, its role in this e-fuels project, which remains subject to a contract with TOYO, demonstrates the diversity of feedstocks that can be used in conjunction with the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) technology.
