Worley awarded FEED contract for Shell Canada’s Polaris CCS project

Australia-headed global engineering consultancy provider WorleyParsons Ltd (Worley) has announced that it has been awarded an engineering services contract by Shell Canada Products for a large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. Worley will provide preliminary front-end engineering and design (FEED) services for Shell Canada's proposed Polaris CCS project.

The Shell Scotford Complex consists of a bitumen upgrader, oil refinery, chemicals plant, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility, and according to Shell, is one of North America’s most efficient, modern, and integrated hydrocarbon processing sites, converting oil sands bitumen into finished, marketable products. The Quest CCS facility which opened in 2015 captures and stores about one million tonnes or one-third of the CO2 emissions from the Shell-operated Scotford Upgrader near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta (AB). The CO2 is transported through a 65-km pipeline and injected more than two km underground below multiple layers of impermeable rock formations. The proposed Polaris CCS project would capture additional CO2 from the complex (photo courtesy Shell).

The proposed Polaris CCS project would capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the refinery and chemicals plant located at Shell’s Scotford Complex near Edmonton, Alberta (AB).

The Polaris CCS facility is expected to start up around 2025, subject to a final investment decision by Shell expected in 2023.

Delivering a more sustainable world for our customers is at the core of everything we do. Working with Shell Canada on its Polaris CCS project reinforces our commitment to helping our customers navigate the energy transition. And underpins our position as industry leaders in low-carbon fuels and decarbonization, said Karen Sobel, Group President, Americas at Worley.
