Finland-headed forest industry and energy technology provider Valmet Oyj has announced that it has been selected to supply boiler conversions and emission reduction solutions for a coal-fired power plant conversion project in Oroszlány, Hungary.

The order is from CHP-Invest Kft, a company belonging to Veolia Energia Magyarország Zrt, the Hungarian subsidiary of France-headed waste management and energy major Veolia Environnement SA (Veolia).
Veolia is one of the leading utility companies in Hungary providing a wide range of sustainable solutions in the fields of energy, water utilities, waste management, and construction.
The group’s ten power plants operate high-efficiency natural gas units and units utilizing biomass as a renewable energy source while its heat networks supply district heating to 270 000 residential and institutional customers nationwide.
Our company intends to include environmentally conscious solutions in all its investments, targeting a long-term solution for the sustainability of the industry. We are gradually converting our existing coal-fired power plants to run on more environmentally friendly and sustainable fuels, said György Palkó, CEO of Veolia Energia Magyarország.
Retrofit and restart
In September 2022, Veolia acquired the assets of the Oroszlányi Erőmű Zrt power station in Oroszlány from Vértesi Erőmű Zrt, a subsidiary of state-owned MVM Zrt.
The fifth-largest coal- and biomass-fired power plant in Hungary, the Oroszlány power plant was taken out of service on December 31, 2015, and is currently in a conserved state.
After the recommissioning, the Oroszlány power plant will produce more than 600 GWh annually of renewable electricity, making up about 1.5 percent of today’s electricity consumption in Hungary, said György Palkó.
The order includes the conversion of two coal-fired boilers to bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) combustion to enable the boilers to run mainly on biomass fuel.
The converted boilers will be handed over to CHP-Invest in the first and second quarters of 2024.
Worth approximately EUR 25 million, Valmet’s rebuild delivery scope includes the main equipment for BFB combustion including emission reduction equipment.
The delivery includes engineering, erection, and commissioning for the complete scope.
