In Sweden, BKtech, a leading supplier of modular bioenergy solutions for industrial steam and Magnusson Petfood AB have signed an agreement for a new BioOne Energy Center to supply process steam at Magnusson’s production site in Bro. The installation will run on renewable wood pellets and marks an important step in Magnusson’s sustainability journey.
Founded on the Magnusson family farm, Håbolund, Magnusson Petfood is known for its high-quality pet food made with Swedish ingredients, a strong focus on animal welfare, and sustainable production.
When it comes to sustainability, we strive to minimize our environmental impact in many ways. We like to use local and sustainable ingredients, reduce waste, and work actively to make our production processes more energy efficient. That’s why it feels right to invest in a plant that meets our steam demand with a fossil-free and renewable fuel, said Kåre Magnusson, CEO of Magnusson Petfood.
Turn-key modular solution
BKtech’s BioOne is a prefabricated and modular Energy Center that includes a steam boiler, pellet storage, burner, control system, and feedwater tank.
The solution is factory-tested in Blomstermåla before delivery, which minimizes commissioning time and makes it easy to relocate the unit, if needed.
BioOne is one of our best-selling products, meeting customer demands for both component quality and reliability. Since it’s prefabricated and modular, it’s fully assembled before delivery, which makes installation straightforward and ensures dependable operation. For Magnusson, the Energy Center will also be painted red to blend in with the beautiful surroundings, said Staffan Lundegårdh, Sales Manager Nordic at BKtech.
Increasing demand for pet food
This is BKtech’s first agreement with a pet food producer – a sector with significant potential.
According to the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF) report Protecting Pet Food Ingredients (2024), pet ownership in Europe has increased to 352 million animals, with 50 percent of households now owning a pet – up from 38 percent in 2019.
Europe currently produces around 9.9 million tonnes of pet food annually, and the market is expected to keep growing. With large parts of the industry still dependent on fossil fuels, the opportunity to decarbonize production with renewable steam is substantial.
In pet food production, process steam is used in several applications, whether for wet or dry feed, which represents a major opportunity for us at BKtech. With the right technology, expertise, and market presence, we can help pet food manufacturers transition to fossil-free and renewable steam based on wood pellets instead of fossil alternatives, said Axel Fohlin, Market Intelligence Analyst at BKtech.
Delivery of the 870 kWth Energy Center to Magnusson Petfood, the value of which has not been disclosed, is scheduled for autumn 2025.
