Canada-headed Convertus Group (Convertus), a sustainable waste management company, has announced the "strategic acquisition" of the Freestate Farms composting facility in Manassas, Virginia (VA). Built and operated through a public-private partnership with Prince William County, the facility is Convertus’ first composting facility in the United States marking its expanding impact in the growing organic waste management sector.
Situated in the second most populated county in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Manassas-based composting facility is strategically positioned for growth.
With a 20-year contract securing exclusive rights to yard waste, coupled with the recent implementation of a yard waste diversion mandate, the facility can meet the growing demands of the region.
We are thrilled to expand our footprint in the United States with the acquisition of the Manassas-based composting facility. We look forward to leveraging our expertise and resources to drive positive change and contribute to Prince William County’s environmental sustainability goals, said Michael Leopold, CEO of Convertus.
The Manassas-based facility underwent significant upgrades in 2020, including an expansion and the installation of advanced aerated static pile technology.
These enhancements not only optimized the control of airflow to efficiently compost material but also substantially decreased the processing time.
Capable of processing 80,000 to 100,000 tonnes per year of organic waste, the facility can produce certified compost, mulch, and soil amendment products available in bulk.
These high-quality products contribute to enriching soil health, elevating nutrient levels, and increasing crop yields.
The site joins Convertus’ growing portfolio of facilities, with a total of 14 operational facilities across North America with another two facilities in the construction phase.
Convertus’ first facility in the United States is a bagging and warehouse facility in Unity, Maine (ME).
With this latest acquisition, the value of which has not been disclosed, Convertus is on track to process over 600,000 tonnes per year, bringing the company closer to its ambitious goal of processing over 1 million tonnes annually.
