In January 2016, US Energy Information Administration (EIA) conducted its first “production and sales” survey of densified biomass fuel manufacturers in the US. Covering 119 facilities, the results of this first Monthly Densified Biomass Fuel Report have now been made available.

Facilities required to report monthly had a total capacity to produce 11.4 million (short) tons of wood pellets annually and collectively had an equivalent of 2 252 full-time employees. Facilities with an annual production capacity less than 10 000 (short) tons are not required to complete the monthly survey. Other data presented includes region, end-use, sales and export volumes, average feedstock and production costs.

EIA proposed the monthly survey in early 2014, and, after industry feedback, received approval from the Office of Management and Budget to conduct the new survey at the end of of August 2015. EIA also notes that the next result release, unspecified when, will contain several months of data. In the months following, data will be released as collection and quality measures are completed.
