Finland is the second EU Member State in the 2025 European Bioenergy Day campaign, an annual campaign organized by Bioenergy Europe to shed light on the increasingly central role sustainable biomass is playing in EU Member States’ energy mix.

August 21, 2025, marks Finland’s Bioenergy Day, indicating that bioenergy could meet Finland’s energy demands for 133 days or the remainder of the 2025 calendar year, based on Eurostat’s figures for 2024 – a day earlier than in 2024.

The annual campaign provides key facts on biomass and the bioenergy industry. It celebrates people, projects, and companies that contribute to achieving European carbon neutrality goals across transportation, industry, space heating, and power, while ensuring energy security.

In the case of Finland, which was also second in 2024, the example is Helsinki’s municipal energy utility Helen Oy that repurposed the country’s last remaining coal-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant to run on wood pellets.

Powered by Bioenergy Europe, the campaign is amplified by national and international partners who support the idea that bioenergy is more than just a renewable energy source—it is a reliable pathway to achieving Europe’s renewable energy transition.
