First physical biomethane delivery in Poland

First physical biomethane delivery in Poland
Biomethane, aka renewable natural gas (RNG), from a biogas upgrading unit.

Germany-based marketer of biomethane, aka renewable natural gas (RNG), bmp greengas GmbH – a subsidiary of VNG Handel & Vertrieb GmbH, has announced that it has physically delivered biomethane to an undisclosed industrial client in Poland. This milestone delivery was made in cooperation with the Polish energy wholesaler HANDEN Sp. z o.o.

The RNG is being used in the production process of a global skincare company that has decided to switch its production processes in Poland to RNG in 2025.

From January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2026, bmp greengas has been covering the company’s annual gas demand through a sales partnership with HANDEN, which is also part of the VNG Group.

Thanks to the import and physical delivery of biomethane – fully certified under the ISCC EU scheme – green gas has been supplied for the first time to an industrial customer in Poland. This milestone sets a new direction for the Polish gas market and could serve as a catalyst for the development of biomethane infrastructure nationwide. Although there are currently no biomethane plants connected to the national gas grid, we believe that upcoming legislative and market developments will accelerate the adoption of green gases such as biomethane, said Jakub Garus, Head of Portfolio at HANDEN.

The supply consists of 19.8 GWh of European biomethane, sustainably certified and sourced from residual and waste materials.

This first physical delivery sends a strong signal to the European market. Biomethane is far more than a niche product – it is a strategic lever for decarbonizing industrial processes. Especially in energy-intensive sectors, it offers an immediately available, scalable, and certified sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. With the first physical delivery to Poland, we are demonstrating that green gases can also have an impact in places where there has previously been no local supply, said Stefan Schneider, Managing Director of bmp greengas.
