In Sweden, Hallands Hamnar AB, the operator of the Port of Halmstad and the Port of Varberg on the Swedish west coast, has announced that it has signed a strategic agreement with the German company Brüning Group for the handling of biomass- and alternative fuels, a segment with strong growth potential.

According to a statement, the agreement means that Brüning Group will establish operations in the Port of Varberg area through a long-term lease.

The partnership is seen as an initial step, in Hallands Hamnar’s long-term ambition to develop a hub for biomass fuels in Halland and meet the increasing demand from the energy sector.

As the demand for biomass and alternative fuels to replace fossil oil and gas has significantly increased, Hallands Hamnar has actively sought strategic partnerships.

Through the agreement with Brüning Group a secure supply of goods is guaranteed, enabling reliable logistics solutions for the energy market and meeting the sector’s growing needs.

The partnership with Brüning Group strengthens our position within the biofuel segment and creates additional opportunities within energy fuel management. We see great potential in expanding our activities in this area, which will create new growth opportunities for both the port and the energy sector in the region, said Jonas Svensson, Business Manager at Hallands Hamnar.

Secure biomass fuel supply regionally

The biomass fuels handled in this partnership come from residual products from forestry operations, wood industry by-products, and wood waste.

Products include woodchips, fuelwood, pellets, and bark, which energy companies use as fuel for facilities such as district heating plants.

Hallands Hamnar Port of Varberg, one of Sweden’s leading forestry ports, has extensive experience in efficiently handling forestry products and biomass fuels.

Brüning Group will establish its operations in Varberg at the beginning of 2025. The designated terminal area and quay access in the Port of Varberg create optimal conditions for growth in the biomass fuel segment.

With the port’s long experience in forestry products and Varberg’s geographic advantages, including short lead times to European highways and proximity to heat and power plants in Västra Götaland and surrounding regions, Hallands Hamnar is well positioned to support the growing biofuel market and contribute to sustainable energy supply.

The geographic location and professional collaboration with Hallands Hamnar meet all the criteria Brüning Group has been looking for. Varberg becomes a perfect puzzle piece in our Scandinavian expansion. A terminal in the port creates multiple possibilities to import or export biofuel, providing our customers with the services they need. We look forward to a long-term partnership with Hallands Hamnar, the regional heat and power plants, and industry in western Sweden, commented Perry Mayr, Business Development Director for Brüning Group in Scandinavia.
