In the United States (US), onsite power generation technology provider Mainspring Energy Inc. has announced that it has signed a landmark sales agreement with American Electric Power (AEP), one of North America’s largest electric utilities, to provide up to 1.6 GW of Mainspring Linear Generators through 2034.
The agreement represents the largest procurement of linear generators to date, a key milestone for Mainspring Energy as it extends operations beyond the commercial, industrial, and data center markets into the investor-owned electric utility sector at gigawatt scale.
Mainspring’s linear generators deliver a unique combination of high reliability, dispatchability, efficiency, and low emissions.
The products provide utilities with a rapidly deployable asset that helps maintain grid capacity, stability, and affordability for customers while supporting increased power demands from AI data centers, manufacturing, and electrification.
We continue to pursue new, innovative solutions to help meet the rapid growth in energy demand, support economic growth, and deliver long-term value for our customers. Mainspring’s linear generators can provide additional capacity quickly and efficiently, allowing us to better support growing energy needs, said Bill Fehrman, Chairman, President and CEO at AEP.
As part of the agreement, AEP purchased its first tranche of Mainspring Energy products, 190 MW, for delivery beginning in 2027.
American Electric Power is demonstrating strategic leadership in navigating speed-to-power requirements. This agreement highlights the high value that linear generators bring to AEP and its customers—delivering affordable, reliable, and dispatchable power that works, said Tom Linebarger, CEO of Mainspring Energy.
