In Sweden, municipal energy utility Norrenergi AB has announced that it has entered into a partnership with Belgium-headed biomass combustion specialists Vyncke BV, to replace one of its existing oil-fired boilers with a new, high-efficiency unit that operates on renewable wood powder. This strategic investment represents a significant step toward the company’s goal of providing sustainable, fossil-free district heating to its customers.

According to a statement, the new boiler will have a higher output capacity and will be equipped with an advanced flue gas cleaning system to ensure minimal emissions and optimal efficiency.

Engineering and design work is currently underway, with manufacturing and installation scheduled for 2026–2027.

The new boiler, the value of which has not been disclosed, is expected to begin supplying heat to Norrenergi’s customers in early 2027 and to be fully commissioned, optimized, and approved by mid-2027.

This project is a major milestone in our transition toward renewable energy sources. By replacing oil with wood powder, we are reducing both carbon emissions and our dependence on fossil fuels, while ensuring a reliable and sustainable heat supply for our customers, says Lars Olrin, Plant manager, Norrenergi.

The new boiler system will be a significant contribution to lowering the carbon footprint of Norrenergi’s district heating network and aligns with both local and national targets for climate-neutral energy production.

We are proud to collaborate with Norrenergi in this forward-looking project. Our technology enables a smooth shift from fossil-based to renewable fuels, supporting both energy efficiency and environmental goals, says Jef Mestdagh, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer, Vyncke.
