Inlandsbanan bets on renewable diesel for road- and rail

In Sweden, rail operator Inlandsbanan AB has made a commitment that the Group's track-bound vehicles are to be fossil-free during 2020 as part of its efforts to offer customers sustainable passenger and freight transportation. As such it is the first in the Swedish rail industry to refuel its vehicles with HVO on a large scale.

The Inlandsbanan railway line is not electrified. This means that the vast majority of train engines and railbuses that use the line operate on fossil diesel fuel. In a step to achieve the company’s goal that the Group’s track-bound vehicles are fossil-free during 2020, construction of refueling stations for renewable diesel (hydrotreated vegetable oil – HVO), is now underway.

The first facility is now in place in Östersund, from where the company can refuel both rail vehicles and road vehicles. Supplier of the 50 m3 cistern is Energifabriken AB, which also supplies the HVO fuel. In a forthcoming procurement in 2019, additional tank facilities are planned along the railway line and then in Mora, Sveg, Hoting, Storuman, and Arvidsjaur.

The establishment of refueling stations for HVO means a gradual reduction of the company’s current diesel use, which previously amounted to approximately 500 m3 per annum.
