Valmet to supply a flue gas cleaning and heat recovery plant to Kotkan Energia

In Finland, global forest industry and energy technology major Valmet Oyj has announced that it will supply a flue gas cleaning and heat recovery plant to Kotkan Energia Oy's waste-to-energy combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Korkeakoski. The investment will enable Kotkan Energia to recover energy from the water vapour in flue gas and increase its district heat production capacity.

Kotkan Energia Oy is an energy group wholly owned by the city of Kotka. The investment, the amount of which has not been disclosed, will enable Kotkan Energia to recover energy from the water vapour in flue gas and increase its district heat production capacity at its waste-to-energy combined heat and power (CHP) plant.

This investment will take us another step closer to CO2 neutral production. Our greenhouse gas emissions will decrease by 4 000 tonnes annually, corresponding to over 10 000 return flights between Helsinki and Ivalo in Lapland, a distance of over 1,000 km. Also, our resource efficiency will improve significantly. The amount of peat, oil and other fuels that will not be combusted corresponds to the annual consumption of heating 1 500 single-family homes, said Timo Aaltonen, Managing Director, Kotkan Energia Oy.

Valmet’s delivery consists of a flue gas cleaning and heat recovery plant, including circulation pumps and a district heat exchanger. Additionally, the delivery includes a blower rebuild and a new stack whereas the condensate treatment is optional.

The delivery covers plant engineering, procurement, manufacturing, haulage, installation, commissioning and training along with basic electrical and automation engineering, as well as motor and instrument deliveries.

The order is a continuation to the heat recovery plants that Valmet has supplied earlier to waste-to-energy plants. And this is our second identical delivery to Kotkan Energia, as we supplied a flue gas cleaning and heat recovery plant to its recycled fuel boiler in 2009, remarked Risto Hämäläinen, Director, Environmental Systems, Valmet.

According to Valmet, the value of this kind of order is typically between EUR 2-10 million. The new flue gas cleaning and heat recovery plant will start up in October 2019.

The waste-to-energy plant in Korkeakoski utilizes household waste as energy to replace natural gas imported from Russia. The plant started its commercial operation in 2009.

Treating around 16 000 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) per annum the 34 MW CHP plant has an annual energy production of approximately 260 GWh.

In addition to the parent company, the Kotkan Energia group consists of two subsidiaries: Karhu Voima Verkko Oy and Karhu Voima Palvelu Oy. The company’s main products are district heat, industrial steam and electricity, and waste-to-energy services.
