Netherlands-based bioenergy technology specialists HoSt has announced that its subsidiary Bright Biomethane has been selected to supply a biogas-to-biomethane upgrading system to the ‘Energy Conversion Facility’ in Beerse, Belgium. Not only is it the first Bright Biomethane project in Belgium, but it will also be the very first biomethane installation in the country.

According to a statement, the biogas upgrading installation will be realised for IOK Afvalbeheer, a waste management organisation for several municipalities in the north of Belgium. It is suitable for 150 Nm3 of biogas per hour in the first phase and for up to 400 Nm3 of biogas per hour in the nearby future.
On one of their facilities, biogas is produced by the dry digestion of around 35 000 tonnes of garden, fruit and vegetable waste from households in the area of Kempen. Around 25 percent of the biogas will be used to produce biomethane with the Bright Biomethane system.
The remaining 75 percent is used in a combined heat and power (CHP) to produce electricity and heat for use in the biogas and upgrading plant. In the future, the energy production will shift towards more biomethane which is already accounted for with the expandable upgrading system.
