OGE and TES to develop major CO2 pipeline network

Netherlands-headed "green and clean" hydrogen company Tree Energy Solutions B.V. (TES) and Open Grid Europe GmbH (OGE), one of Europe's leading transmission system operators are planning to build a 1 000 km long pipeline network to enable the transport of carbon dioxide for sequestration and to enable its reuse in a green circular closed-loop system.

To prioritize the provision of green energy while reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions such as unavoidable process-related emissions, OGE and TES, have entered a strategic partnership for a CO2 circular economy.

The pipeline network, starting from a green gas import terminal to be built by TES in Wilhelmshaven, Germany will integrate important industrial, power, and mobility locations around Germany.

The commissioning of the first part of the network, which is anticipated to be some 1 000 km in length and enable a transport volume of around 18 million tonnes of CO2 annually, is expected in 2028.

To achieve our climate targets, we must invest in renewable energies and above all hydrogen but also offer a solution to industries in Germany that need to capture and utilize their CO2 emissions. This requires a CO2 infrastructure. We will offer these to all interested parties openly and under standardized conditions, said Dr Jörg Bergmann, CEO of OGE.

Interest from heavy industry

OGE and TES are in conversation with German steel producers, cement/ lime producers, power plant operators and chemical plant operators to transport CO2 via the new pipeline back to the future Wilhelmshaven green energy hub.

Right from the start, the transport network will be equally open to other market participants.

The CO2 pipeline network supports the closed-loop circularity strategy, ensuring that CO2 can be kept within the TES cycle and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are avoided, said Paul van Poecke, Founder and Managing Director at TES.

The carbon cycle strategy will significantly accelerate the energy transition in Germany and help the industry, power, and mobility, sectors achieve their decarbonization targets.

This requires the companies say requires a nationwide CO2 strategy and corresponding steering instruments.

Via this project, the CO2 will be captured and reused in a circular closed-loop system as a carrier to transport green hydrogen or as a resource in other industries, Paul van Poecke said.

TES is currently developing energy supply and import terminal locations in Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and the United States (US) to provide an integrated network on a significant global scale. Initial production and export terminal locations are being developed in the Middle East and North America.
