In Sweden, a fire at the SCA Bionorr wood pellet production facility in Härnosand has destroyed a pellet storage unit containing an estimated 6,000 - 7,000 tonnes of pellets.
According to local media reports, a fire broke out in Murbergsviken at one of the production plant’s pellet storage units on the night of October 4, 2025. Five units from the local fire service were sent to fight the blaze, and no injuries were reported.
One of the largest pellet plants in Sweden, the SCA Bionorr facility in Härnösand, produced around 180,000 tonnes in 2024. The plant has six pellet storage facilities in the area, including Murbergsviken, and the fire has destroyed a storage facility that contained an estimated 6,000 – 7,000 tonnes of pellets.
On October 6, 2025, SCA Bionorr’s operations manager, Johan Stark, told national TV news channel SVT that it would likely take four to five days to extinguish the fire, and that pellet production, unaffected by the incident, would continue.
Using a wheeled loader, pellets from the storage unit were being transferred to locations outside the fire area. However, the roof has since collapsed, and the building’s steel structure has been damaged, exposing the remaining pellets to both rain and wind.
On the evening of October 7, 2025, the fire service was called out again as the fire restarted, taking until the morning of October 8, 2025, to extinguish. The fire site is currently under observation until further notice.
