Bio Capital Group, a UK leading producer of renewable energy from food waste, has announced that it has been awarded a new two-year contract by North Yorkshire Council to deliver a dedicated waste collection service for the authority’s commercial customers.

Formed in 2018 and 100 percent owned by Equitix Group, a leading international investor, developer, and fund manager in infrastructure, Bio Capital Group is currently the UK’s largest producer of renewable electricity and biomethane aka renewable natural gas (RNG), derived from food waste.

According to a statement, the partnership marks another step forward in Bio Capital’s mission to support local authorities in meeting their sustainability goals through innovative, low-carbon waste solutions.

Under the terms of the agreement, Bio Capital will provide food waste collection services for businesses across North Yorkshire, using its own fleet of environmentally friendly compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.

This approach helps to support the council’s sustainability goals by significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the waste collection process.

The collected food waste will then be transported to Bio Capital’s Emerald Biogas anaerobic digestion (AD) facility, where it will be transformed into renewable energy and power regional homes and businesses.

We are very pleased to be partnering with Bio Capital to deliver this new food waste collection service for our commercial customers. It is an example of our commitment to continuously improve our offer to businesses and supports our ambition to lead by example when it comes to securing a sustainable future for the region. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this partnership will have across the county, said Cllr Richard Foster, North Yorkshire Council.

The site plays a key role in Bio Capital’s circular economy model, converting food waste into renewable electricity and RNG, as well as biofertiliser that goes back onto the land to support sustainable farming.

Our partnership with North Yorkshire Council is a fantastic example of how local authorities and green infrastructure providers can work together to deliver real-world, fully circular environmental benefits. By using our CNG-powered fleet and processing food waste at our Emerald Biogas facility, we’re not just collecting waste but are transforming it into renewable energy and helping to build a more sustainable future for the region, commented George O’Malley, Chief Operations Officer at Bio Capital.

The agreement with North Yorkshire Council, the value of which has not been disclosed, will run until March 2027.
