The apparent wood pellet market in Sweden decreased by 19 percent in 2025 compared to 2024, according to a survey of pellet producers in Sweden conducted by Swedish Bioenergi's (Svebio) online publication, Bioenergitidningen.se.
According to the survey of all pellet producers in Sweden conducted in February/March 2026, Swedish pellet production in 2025 totalled 1,548,774 tonnes, a decrease of 27,294 tonnes compared to 2024 (1,576,068 tonnes), or a marginal 1.7 percent drop.
In energy terms, 2025 pellet production corresponded to 7.4 TWh, a decrease of approximately 130 GWh from 2024.
Decreased imports and increased exports
Statistics from Statistics Sweden (SCB) for imports and exports in 2025 show that pellet imports were halved in 2025, while pellet export volumes doubled. Imports decreased from 312,014 tonnes in 2024 to approximately 146,525 tonnes of imported pellets in 2025.
Pellet exports increased by over 122,231 tonnes to total 357,490 tonnes in 2025. As such, Sweden went from being a net importer in 2024 to becoming a net exporter in 2025 – a net import of 76,755 tonnes in 2024 to a net export of 210,965 tonnes in 2025.
A significant market contraction
Using a simplified formula to define the apparent market (production plus imports minus exports equals the apparent market), the changes in production, imports, and exports show that the Swedish market had contracted by 315,014 tonnes, or 19 percent, in 2025.
The authors note that pellet inventory at producers and clients is not included in these figures. Furthermore, not all producers have supplied actual production figures; in which case, an estimate has been used.
The Swedish Energy Agency began collecting pellet inventory statistics for producers in December 2023. In December 2025, the inventory was 56 percent, down from 66 percent in December 2024.
In terms of quantity, the inventory decreased by 89,000 tonnes, from 490,000 tonnes in December 2024 to 401,000 tonnes in December 2025.
Finally, the overall production target is 1,761,700 tonnes for 2026, compared to 1,818,900 tonnes for 2025–a reduction of almost 60,000 tonnes, equivalent to the annual production of an average mid-sized Swedish pellet plant.
