Finland-headed material handling and size reduction specialist BMH Technology Oy has announced that it has signed a contract with Ecoplanta Molecular Recycling Solutions, a Repsol company, for the delivery of a complete process plant for Waste-to-Methanol feedstock preparation. The system will be based on BMH Technology’s proven high-capacity and high-availability "TYRANNOSAURUS" technology, and expected to start operation in 2029.
Ecoplanta Molecular Recycling Solutions is building a pioneering waste-to-methanol facility in El Morell, near Tarragona, Spain.
The plant will be the first in Europe to convert non-recyclable municipal solid waste (MSW) and biomass into renewable methanol at scale, processing up to 400,000 tonnes of waste annually and producing approximately 240,000 tonnes of methanol.
By diverting waste from landfills, the project will significantly reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and support European sustainability goals.
This project marks a significant step forward in sustainable waste management and the circular economy in Spain. We are proud to support Ecoplanta’s innovative approach to Bio and circular methanol production and look forward to delivering our advanced TYRANNOSAURUS technology to help transform waste into methanol, said Peter Wallenius, Senior Advisor at BMH Technology.
Funded by the European Union’s Innovation Fund, the facility is expected to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 3.4 million tonnes over its first ten years of operation.
We are excited to partner with BMH Technology Oy for this groundbreaking project. BMH’s TYRANNOSAURUS technology will be essential to address the pre-treatment of the non-recyclable fraction of municipal solid waste, which is highly heterogeneous and complex. With this solution, we will be able to transform waste into feedstock for renewable and circular methanol production. Our ambition is to create value from waste that today ends up in landfills, and to achieve this, we need strong technology partnerships, said Juan Lorenzo Boix for Ecoplanta Molecular Recycling Solutions.
The delivery from BMH Technology includes the design, manufacture, and supply of a comprehensive process plant for processing waste to feedstock for methanol production.
BMH Technology’s TYRANNOSAURUS system is renowned for its robust performance, reliability, and ability to handle demanding waste streams at high capacity.
This project will further strengthen BMH Technology’s position in the Spanish market and contribute to the advancement of sustainable industrial solutions in Europe.
