In Morocco, global waste-to-energy and renewable gas solutions provider Kanadevia Inova AG, together with its partners Nareva and Itochu, has announced a major milestone with the signing of the concession agreement for the Casablanca Solid Waste Treatment and Valorization Project with the Municipality of Casablanca, and with the signing of electricity off-take agreements with SRM Casablanca-Settat and ONEE.
The project represents a significant step forward for sustainable waste management in Morocco and marks Kanadevia Inova’s entry into the North African waste-to-energy market.
Key contractual steps, including the limited notice to proceed (LNTP) and the preparation of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) activities, are now being advanced.
Integrate waste management and renewable energy
Developed by an international and local consortium, the project will transform municipal solid waste (MSW) management in Greater Casablanca, serving more than 4.2 million inhabitants, by combining waste treatment, landfill management and renewable energy generation.
The 33.5-year concession provides for the exclusive treatment of Casablanca’s municipal waste.
The Casablanca Waste-to-Energy facility will process approximately 1.5 million tonnes annually, increasing waste valorisation rates to around 80 percent and significantly reducing reliance on landfills.
The facility will have an installed capacity of approximately 126 MWe of baseload electricity, complemented by 50 MWp of solar PV and 4 MW of landfill gas (LFG) recovery, resulting in total annual electricity production of around 1 TWh.
This will supply nearly one million inhabitants and support Morocco’s energy transition amid rising electricity demand of around 3 percent annually through 2030.
Transitioning from landfill to energy recovery
Together with Nareva, the project’s lead investor and Moroccan partner, and Itochu, the consortium combines international technical expertise, investment strength, and local execution capabilities to deliver Morocco’s first integrated Waste-to-Energy infrastructure.
For this project, Kanadevia Inova is responsible for EPC, operations support, long-term maintenance, and financing of the facility.
Located next to the Mediouna Landfill, one of Africa’s largest methane-emitting sites, the Casablanca Waste-to-Energy project will significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by shifting from landfill to energy recovery.
Studies by organisations such as the IPCC and the European Commission show that diverting waste from landfill to WtE can avoid approximately 0.5–1.0 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions per tonne of waste through methane avoidance, energy generation and material recovery.
Beyond environmental, public health and land-saving benefits, the project will support local economic development, creating around 140 skilled operational jobs and significant employment during construction, with approximately 1,240 workers over 3.5 years, plus an additional 300 jobs for related infrastructure.
Proven technology for sustainable waste management
The plant will feature advanced technologies, including three ultra-large combustion lines, Inova Grate, Autaro combustion control, SNCR DeNOx, and state-of-the-art flue gas cleaning systems, alongside a steam turbine generator.
Emissions will comply with EU Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) and Best Available Techniques (BAT) standards, ensuring levels remain well below regulatory thresholds.
