Nurmes biogas plant receives first manure deliveries

In Finland, Suomen Lantakaasu Oy’s biogas plant in Nurmes will begin receiving its first manure deliveries in early July 2026. The first manure delivery will arrive from a nearby Valio dairy farm.

Suomen Lantakaasu is a joint venture owned by Finnish dairy major Valio Oy and Nordic biomethane company St1 Biokraft Oy.

Located in the Pitkämäki district of Nurmes, the Upper Savo biogas plant complex has been granted EUR 19.2 million in NextGenerationEU funding.

To be commissioned during 2026, the Nurmes plant will produce biogas primarily from manure and grass, although the facility may also receive food industry waste unsuitable for feed use.

At the plant, biogas will be further upgraded into biomethane, aka renewable natural gas (RNG), which will be compressed and transported for liquefaction to Suomen Lantakaasu’s biogas plant in Kiuruvesi.

Second satellite facility

The Nurmes plant is the second satellite facility connected to the industrial-scale centralised liquefied biomethane (bioLNG) production plant built in Kiuruvesi.

These satellite facilities help keep feedstock transport distances as short as possible.

The arrival of the first manure deliveries in Nurmes means that all plants included in the Upper Savo biogas project have now begun receiving manure. The commissioning of the satellite facilities marks the piloting of a new operating model that combines decentralised biogas production with centralised liquefaction. A successful pilot could open up significant new opportunities for increasing biogas production in Finland, said Leena Helminen, CEO of Suomen Lantakaasu.

The Nurmes biogas plant will process 34,500 tonnes of feedstock annually and produce at least 717 tonnes (10 GWh) of biomethane.

In addition, the production process will generate 34,500 tonnes of organic fertiliser annually, which will be returned to farms.
