AFRY Norway, the Norwegian arm of Nordic engineering and consultancy majors AFRY (ÅF Pöyry AB) has announced that it has been selected by Silva Green Fuel AS to design a demonstration biorefinery for the production of second-generation biofuels. The plant will be built at Tofte in Norway and will produce advanced, second-generation cellulosic biofuels based on forest feedstock.

Advanced second-generation biofuels based on renewable forest raw materials can be an important contributor to reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the transport sector, which account for 33 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in Norway.
In 2015, the Swedish forest industry major Södra and Norwegian energy major Statkraft formed the joint venture company Silva Green Fuel AS to establish future commercial production of advanced biofuel based on forest raw materials.
In December 2017, Silva Green Fuel announced that it would go ahead and invest in a demonstration plant to be built at Statkraft’s biomass hub facility in Tofte, Norway. Approximately 25 percent of the estimated NOK 500 million (≈ EUR 51.14 million) investment will be funded by the Norwegian agency Enova SF.
Broad expertise in biofuels
AFRY has been selected to design the demonstration plant the purpose of which is to test technology for the continuous production of so-called drop-in advanced or second-generation biofuel based on raw material from the forest before making the decision to invest in a larger commercial plant.
AFRY has broad expertise in the development of advanced biofuels and has established a strong position within the industry market in Norway following the merger between ÅF and Pöyry in 2019. AFRY is a leading player in the Nordics within biofuels engineering, design and consulting services.
The company has been involved in the pre-project and has now been commissioned to detail engineer the demonstration plant at Tofte. As part of the contract, AFRY will provide engineering consultancy and design services for process engineering, mechanical, building, electrical and instrument, fire safety, and geotechnical solutions.
Our goal is to create sustainable solutions for our customers and this groundbreaking project gives us the opportunity to make a difference in the transport sector. Biofuels are one of our focus areas and we look forward to developing a good solution together with Silva Green Fuel, said Jon Julsen, Director of Process Industries at AFRY Norway.
