France-headed chemical process technology provider Axens, an IFP Group company, has announced that it has been selected to supply its "Vegan" technology to produce low-carbon, cost-competitive sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by three different renewable diesel (HVO) – SAF projects located in Malaysia, Pakistan, and Portugal.
According to a statement, LOKEN, a subsidiary of Malaysia’s Barium Selat Group that is developing a renewable energy complex in Southeast Asia; SAFCO Venture Holdings Ltd (SAFCO Ventures), a British Virgin Islands (BVI) headed company that owns and operates biofuel facilities in Pakistan; and Galp SGPS, S.A, Portugal’s largest energy company, have all selected Axens’ Vegan offering.
These three companies will implement Axens’ Vegan solution for their respective hydrogenated vegetable oil and sustainable aviation fuel (HVO/SAF) production facilities located in Malaysia, Pakistan, and Portugal respectively to accelerate the reduction of their global carbon footprint and the shift from conventional to renewable fuel technologies.
Axens will supply technology licenses, catalysts, proprietary equipment, training, and technical services for these new projects.
Axens originally pioneered the first-generation biodiesel market in the 1990s, with the “Esterfip” technologies, earning in 2007 the Kirkpatrick Award for Chemical Engineering Achievement based on the transesterification process.
The Vegan technology was then developed by IFP Energies Nouvelles in the mid-2000s, based upon an extensive research and development program.
Eight years after the successful start-up of its first reference, Axens’ Vegan is today a globally marketed technology dedicated to the production of SAF/HVO through the hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) pathway.
In addition, three other new Vegan units are expected to be started up in the following months.
We are honored to provide our Vegan technology to these three leading energy players with ambitious energy transition objectives. With our highly-proven proprietary solution already adopted by a wide range of customers all over the world, we are pleased to contribute to the industry’s effort and trajectory to decarbonize the energy sector. First of their kind in these countries, these projects integrating Axens’ Vegan technology are significant milestones for both Axens and our partners, said Jean-Luc Nocca, EVP of Commerical at Axens.
