Peab Asfalt continues its investment in sustainable development by the introduction of ECO-Asfalt in Finland. The investment will halve climate emissions from Finnish asphalt production, starting in Lahti as part of the city’s “European Green Capital of 2021” efforts for which Peab Asfalt is a local partner.
“We hope to work together with customers, the city of Lahti, other companies, and the whole construction industry to bring these issues forward,” said Markku Lilja, Business Director Peab Asfalt (photo courtesy Green Lahti).

Peab Asfalt already uses a high proportion of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in its Finnish operations and has switched to using renewable electricity. Now as a partner of Green Lahti – European Green Capital of 2021, it is launching the introduction of its ECO-Asfalt in the Finnish market.

The fact that Peab Asfalt is part of the European Green Capital of 2021 project is very valuable to us, as infrastructure construction has a central role in emissions in the cities. It is good that ECO-Asfalt will be offered in Lahti, said Saara Vauramo, Project Manager for Green Lahti, the city’s organistaion for European Green Capital of 2021.

Reduce climate impact without affecting properties

ECO-Asfalt was introduced in Sweden in 2015 and according to Peab, it has been a great success. The concept is based on Peab Asfalt replacing fossil fuel with biofuel when drying and heating the stone material, the most energy-intensive part of the manufacturing process.

In this way, the climate impact is significantly reduced, without affecting the properties of the end product. Peab’s asphalt plant in Lahti will be the first in Finland to produce ECO-Asfalt, by replacing fossil natural gas with locally produced biogas.

Environmental and sustainability issues are important to us and I am incredibly proud that we are now taking our ECO-Asfalt to Finland. The transition to fossil-free fuels is the most important measure to reduce the asphalt’s climate impact and an important step in achieving the Peab Group’s goal of being climate neutral by 2045, said Håkan Jacobsson, CEO of Peab Asfalt.

Peab Asfalt will be involved in organizing events in Lahti throughout 2021. The company is very positive that the climate issue is highlighted in this way, and that the municipality and the business community together can take important steps to create a sustainable society.

The purpose of the partnership is to promote environmental solutions in the construction industry as well as more environment-friendly production and use of asphalt, mineral aggregates, and concrete by introducing innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions. We hope to work together with customers, the city of Lahti, other companies, and the whole construction industry to bring these issues forward, commented Markku Lilja, Business Director Peab Asfalt.
