The 2022 International Clean Energy Hackathon in Linz, Austria was an opportunity for start-ups to showcase their skills by "hacking" solutions and developing new products for the energy transition. At the upcoming European Pellet Conference in Wels in March 2023, selected hackathon start-ups will showcase their products and solutions.
Organized by OÖ Energiesparverband (OÖESV), the energy agency of Upper Austria, the 2022 International Clean Energy Hackathon was held in Linz on November 14-15, 2022.
The event brought together innovative start-ups and companies from Cleantech-Cluster Energy – OÖESV’s network of sustainable energy companies in Upper Austria.
Among the 31 skilled teams from across 10 countries, five teams worked on three challenges relating to bioenergy, to offer novel solutions for industrial partners to integrate into their business models.
The bioenergy challenges dealt with the following topics:
- Real-time tracking for delivery services for pellet boilers en route from supplier to end user;
- E-fleet charging/usage optimization of a heating installer’s fleet;
- Increasing the efficiency of biomass heating plants through optimizing operation and control parameters for fuel storage and combustion.
At the event, the companies provided coaching and guidance to the teams. This tight collaboration enabled opportunities to strengthen future partnerships beyond the boundaries of the hackathon.
On the second day, after hours of intense brainpower, the teams pitched their innovative ideas to a high-level jury including the energy commissioner of Upper Austria, company CEOs, and other stakeholders.
In the next phase, about 10 of the teams will receive “first level funding” of EUR 9 500 from the EU-funded project Urbantech to continue developing their solution. Through this event and the Urbantech project, innovative start-ups are contributing to energy security and climate neutrality.
To be presented at the European Pellet Conference
ÖOESV’s next big event in bioenergy is the European Pellet Conference – the largest annual pellet event worldwide.
The event takes place on March 1, 2023, in Wels, Upper Austria in the context of the annual World Sustainable Energy Days (WSED), a leading international conference on energy transition and climate neutrality with over 650 participants from over 60 countries each year.
This year’s European Pellet Conference in Wels will show the important role of pellets in responding to the energy crisis, and presents concrete policies, technologies, and markets for securing a clean energy future.
As part of the program, selected hackathon start-ups will showcase their products and solutions.
