Norway-based paper major Norske Skogindustrier ASA (Norske Skog) has inaugurated new production facilities for nanocellulose and biomethane at its Norske Skog Saugbrugs paper mill in Halden, Norway. The inauguration ceremony was officiated by H.M. King Harald of Norway and included a tour of the new facilities.

– There is extensive research and development at all of Norske Skog’s factories at home and abroad, which will give us brand new products in the coming years, said Sven Ombudstvedt, President, and CEO of Norske Skog and chairman of the board of Norske Skog Saugbrugs in a statement.

Biomethane for transportation, nanocellulose for biocomponents

The new biogas and biomethane upgrading plant has been under construction for almost two years, and Norske Skog Saugbrugs has invested around NOK 150 million (≈ EUR 16 million) in the project. The plant is built in conjunction with the existing wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and will use biowaste from paper production to produce renewable energy in the form of biomethane.

The new plant will generate revenues from the sale of biomethane to industrial gas distributor AGA where it will be used as a transportation fuel by buses and trucks in the region, in addition to reducing the cost of paper production. Norske Skog plans to build biogas plants at several of its production facilities plants.

The nanocellulose has a number of interesting uses including reinforcement of paper-based products, replace plastic products, or as thickeners for products like paint.
