Biomethane overtakes fossil gas as UK truckers go green

"Clean, low carbon gas-powered vehicles are an obvious, sustainable choice for transport”, says Mike Foster, Head of the Gas Vehicle Network (GVN), following GVN analysis on the fuel source of gas vehicles, that shows that 55.5 percent of the total gas dispensed for transport fuel in 2018, was biomethane.

In the UK, leading consumer delivery specialist Hermes UK is adding a further 42 units to its fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuelled vehicles. A total of 42 Iveco Stralis CNG tractor units will be added to the operation over the coming weeks, taking the total to 72 across the firm’s fleet (photo courtesy CNG Fuels).

The Gas Vehicle Network (GVN) is a division of the Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA), which brings together major UK companies across the gas vehicle (GV) industry supply chain who are driving the increasing use of gas as a transport fuel.

According to GVN, its statistics on the total dispensed volume of gas for transport fuel in 2018 show that 55.5 percent of gas for transport fuel was biomethane, a renewable and sustainable fuel.

GVN anticipate this figure to rise for 2019 statistics. Biomethane fuelled HGVs emit 85 percent less carbon into the atmosphere compared to a ‘clean’ Euro 6 diesel. The sector accounts for a disproportionate share (17 percent) of transport carbon emissions but only 2 percent of vehicles on our roads are HGVs and buses, and they travel 6 percent of miles. The road ahead is clear for fleet managers and the Government to achieve substantial carbon savings by 2025. Switch to low carbon gas-powered heavy vehicle transport. In addition, thanks to the work of the Gas Vehicle Network, the government has in place a fuel duty differential until 2032, making it financially a sensible decision to switch to gas from diesel, said Mike Foster.
