Capsul’in Pro launches world’s first 100% biobased and compostable coffee capsule

Luxembourg-based company Capsul’in Pro has launched its Zero Impact "Nespresso"-compatible coffee capsule, the first of its kind to be 100 percent biobased, certified home compostable, and with a high oxygen barrier that protects the flavour and aroma of the coffee. The new Zero Impact capsule is completely plant-based and does not contain materials derived from fossil fuels. After use, the capsule can be put in a home compost bin or collected with organic waste for anaerobic digesters (AD).

According to Capsul’in Pro, its new Capsul’in Zero Impact is the world’s first coffee capsule “OK Compost Home” certified, 100 percent biobased, with an oxygen barrier, and compatible with the Nespresso system (photo courtesy Capsul’in Pro).

Capsul’in Pro is one of the largest manufacturers of empty Nespresso-compatible capsules serving large coffee brands and coffee distributors worldwide. Based in Luxembourg, the company was founded in 2011 and is owned by the three founders. Capsul’in Pro developed and owns the proprietary, patented In Mold Label (IML) technology which allows the oxygen barrier and pre-printed labels to be applied directly onto coffee capsules.

According to the company, its IML Zero Impact coffee capsule is the first 100 perent biobased, home compostable coffee capsule with a high oxygen barrier, resulting in perfect protection of flavours and aromas. The Zero Impact coffee capsules are produced in Luxembourg and the company produces its other ranges across the EU and Switzerland, assuring quality control and strict compliance with EU regulation.

The product premiered at the AMI Single-Serve virtual conference and presented by company CEO Laurent Lombart. Capsul’in Pro has spent five years developing the technology to be the first company to solve the challenge of making a coffee capsule that is both biobased and has a high oxygen barrier.

Zero Impact refers to the capsule’s Zero Impact on fossil resources. This new capsule is in line with the European Union’s Circular Economy Action Plan which aims to reduce the environmental impact of packaging by 2030.

Today, thanks to Capsul’in Pro’s IML Zero Impact capsule, consumers can have a more sustainable, home compostable coffee capsule with an excellent result-in-cup. Consumers now have more coffee capsule choices for a more sustainable everyday life. We are committed to shifting a significant share of the coffee capsule market to our Zero Impact capsules, said Laurent Lombart.
