EBB supports US biodiesel industry anti-dumping and countervailing duty filing

The European Biodiesel Board (EBB) welcomed today’s announcement by the National Biodiesel Board (NBB), that filed both an anti-dumping and countervailing duty complaints against dumped and subsidised biodiesel imports to the US from Argentina and Indonesia.

Earlier today, the National Biodiesel Board (NBB), a US trade association representing the biodiesel and renewable diesel industries filed an antidumping and countervailing duty petition, making the case that Argentine and Indonesian companies are violating trade laws by flooding the US market with dumped and subsidised biodiesel.

In a statement, the European Biodiesel Board (EBB), an industry association that represents around 75 percent of European biodiesel production expressed its support of NBB’s decision to take legal action to counter the “unfair” trade practices originating in both Argentina and Indonesia and “denounce and disrupt the illegal trade patterns”.

According to EBB, the EU biodiesel market has faced the exact same challenge a few years back, as a result of which definitive anti-dumping duties were imposed against biodiesel imported from both countries in November 2013.

The unfair trade practices resulting especially from the Differential Export Tax (DET) in place both in Argentina and Indonesia, have caused serious economic damage that has been challenged and condemned not only in the EU but equally in Peru.

We welcome NBB action and are confident about the success of the freshly lodged complaints. After Peruvians did the same few months ago, the US market’s recourse to a legal solution clearly shows that the unfair trade imbalances caused by the Argentineans and Indonesian producers are impossible to cope with and pose a severe threat to the global biodiesel market’s level playing field. Most importantly, we hope that the news will also send a strong signal to EU authorities about the undeniably legitimate character of the EU trade defence measures in place for biodiesel against Indonesia and Argentina, said Raffaello Garofalo, Secretary General of EBB.
