EcoDataCenter AB (EcoDC), a digital infrastructure company that designs, builds, and operates data centers in Sweden, has announced that it has signed a land purchase agreement with Smedjebacken Municipality to build its third data center campus in the Dalarna region.
The agreement follows a Letter of Intent (LoI) between the two parties that has been in place since 2019.
The purchase covers 52 hectares (ha) of land, and construction is expected to begin as soon as building and environmental permits are finalized, which is anticipated in early 2027.
Once fully built out, the facility is expected to support 125–150 permanent jobs, with several hundred additional roles during construction. The Smedjebacken campus has the green light for an immediate 150 MW with a credible opportunity to expand further.
This is a major step toward breaking ground. An establishment of this scale means a great deal for the local labor market. EcoDataCenter’s high ambitions on sustainability were a decisive factor in the municipality’s decision, said Fredrik Rönning, Chair of the Municipal Executive Board, Smedjebacken Municipality.
Third data center
This marks EcoDataCenter’s third establishment in the region, following its original site in Falun and a second facility in Borlänge, continuing the company’s strategy of scaling capacity close to its roots while giving clients direct access to a growing footprint of data center infrastructure in Sweden.
The region already hosts a strong concentration of hyperscale operators, and this expansion further reinforces the region’s position as one of the Nordics leading hubs for large-scale digital infrastructure.
