Growing European demand for recyclable and treated waste wood is creating new market opportunities, but tightening market conditions and seasonal imbalances are increasing pressure on logistics and cross-border supply chains. To meet this development, Geminor is strengthening its capabilities to connect Danish waste wood producers with industrial off-takers across Northern Europe.

According to Norway-headquartered resource management and trading company Geminor, the Danish waste wood market has changed significantly over the past decade.

In 2012, around half of Denmark’s approximately 400,000 tonnes of recyclable waste wood was used for energy recovery.

Today, an ever-increasing share is recycled into new wood-based products, reflecting stronger circular economy ambitions and growing European demand for secondary raw materials.

Mitigating seasonal demand

Demand for treated waste wood for energy recovery is also increasing, particularly in Germany, where Geminor has grown in recent years by doubling the off-take capacity.

However, the market is becoming increasingly challenging as seasonal fluctuations mean that supply and demand rarely peak at the same time.

These imbalances are placing growing pressure on logistics, storage capacity and cross-border transport, making resilient supply chains more important than ever.

‍To support these changing market dynamics, Geminor continues to strengthen its logistics capabilities, market access and long-term partnerships across Northern Europe.

Demand is growing across both recycling and energy recovery, but the market is also becoming more complex. Success increasingly depends on connecting producers with the right markets at the right time. That requires flexible logistics, strong partnerships and a long-term perspective, said Jens Juel Rasmussen, Country Manager Denmark at Geminor.

The ambition is to ensure that waste wood continues to move efficiently despite seasonal bottlenecks, creating reliable and sustainable supply chains for both producers and industrial off-takers.

Our ambition is to make it easier for Danish producers to access the right European markets while providing industrial customers with reliable deliveries throughout the year. By strengthening our logistics capabilities and working closely with both producers and off-takers, we are building resilient and sustainable supply chains that create value for everyone involved, said Christian Bech Poulsen, responsible for Geminor Denmark’s waste wood business.

Denmark is well positioned

As European demand continues to grow, Denmark is well positioned to supply waste wood to both the recycling and energy recovery sectors.

Geminor will continue working with producers and industrial customers to develop resilient cross-border supply chains capable of meeting future market demands.
