Evonik enters membrane technology public-private partnership in Asia
Evonik's proprietary SEPURAN Green membranes are produced at its site in Schörfling, Austria. The base material, a high-performance hollow-fibre polymer that is highly resistant to pressure and temperature, is produced in neighboring Lenzing.

Germany-headed global specialty chemicals major Evonik Industries AG (Evonik) has announced that has signed a large-scale agreement to supply its SEPURAN Green membranes and patented technology to MTC Orec Sdn Bhd (MTCO), a prominent biogas upgrading plant producer based in Malaysia.

Co-owned and managed by VentureTECH, an entity funded by the Malaysian government, MTCO is a key designer and builder of biogas upgrading plants, with plans to further expand this renewable energy technology across Asia.

We are delighted to become the membrane technology partner of such a prominent renewable energy provider as MTCO. Their goals for the further development of biogas upgrading plants in Malaysia and across Asia are well aligned with our  growth strategy for SEPURAN, said Dr Goetz Baumgarten, Head of Membranes and Fibers product line at Evonik’s business line High Performance Polymers.

The special partnership between Evonik and MTCO came into force at a signing event on April 23, 2026, with delegates from both companies present at Evonik’s membranes site in Schoerfling, Austria.

Evonik’s SEPURAN Green membranes are designed to turn biogas into high-purity biomethane – a filtering process known as “biogas upgrading.”

The membranes consist of proprietary polyimide fibers, spun at Evonik’s site in Austria, and are contained in ready-to-use cylindrical modules, assembled in Schoerfling.

Thanks to this backward integration, SEPURAN Green membranes are fully customizable to a customer’s exact biogas upgrading specifications.

Key features include the ability to produce biomethane of liquid natural gas (LNG) quality with very little energy.

Additionally, SEPURAN Green technology includes patents for system design in the US, the EU, and other regions, found in more than 2,000 upgrading plants worldwide.

Our collaboration with Evonik reflects a shared commitment to advancing biomethane solutions through engineering excellence and continuous innovation. With the support and guidance of VentureTECH, we have strengthened our capabilities, refined our strategic focus, and accelerated our regional expansion. We aren’t just building plants; we are developing an ecosystem that supports Malaysia’s position as the central hub for bioenergy in Southeast Asia, said Dr Zahari bin Mohamad, CEO of MTCO.
