First delivery of biofuel from Fly Green Fund to Gothenburg Landvetter Airport

Coinciding with the first day of the Advanced Biofuels Conference being held in Gothenburg, Sweden, Swedish airport operator Swedavia has revealed that as of today domestic aircraft refuelling at its Gothenburg Landvetter Airport (GOT) are using a biofuel blended fuel.

– We are delighted that Swedavia continues its investment into sustainable aviation biofuel. 2016 was the first year when Swedavia chose to buy 450 tonnes of biofuel through Fly Green Fund. This corresponds to Swedavia’s annual aviation fuel consumption for own internal flights by its personnel. Swedavia was the first in the world with this venture and we are excited to cooperate with such brave companies that go ahead and show the way to a fossil-free domestic flight, said Maria Fiskerud, CEO of Fly Green Fund.

Fly Green Fund is a unique Nordic service innovation that enables organizations and individuals in the Nordic region to reduce their climate footprint by flying on sustainable biofuel. Swedavia operates ten domestic airports in Sweden including Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN).

– With the delivery to Göteborg Landvetter Airport, we have reached another milestone. Now we reach out to new travellers who are given a chance to join the Fly Green Fund and start flying on biofuel, said Fiskerud congratulating delegates flying in for the Advanced Biofuels Conference currently taking place in Gothenburg.

Swedavia joined the Fly Green Fund already two years ago. Being an airport operator with an ambition to reduce its carbon footprint, the company is striving towards enabling fossil-free domestic flights.

– This is primarily a concrete measure to reduce our climate impact, but what is equally important is to show that it is already possible to fly on fossil fuels. Now we want more companies, public institutions and individuals to follow and buy biofuel for their air travel. Together we can make domestic flights fossil-free by 2030, said Charlotte Ljunggren, Airport Director at Göteborg Landvetter Airport.

Fly Green Fund has hired SkyNRG as a subcontractor to organize delivery of sustainable aviation biofuel to Swedavia airports. The fuel is produced by US producer AltAir Fuels and is delivered by SkyNRG in cooperation with AirBP.

– Swedavia’s support demonstrates that an airport can play an important role in making the aviation industry more sustainable. As our partner and corporate customer, they have set a great example for other airports worldwide and we hope that will motivate other organizations to follow their example and start flying sustainable, said Theye Veen, CFO SkyNRG.


About Fly Green Fund

Fly Green Fund is a non-profit association that enables organisations and individuals to reduce their climate footprint on air travel. The aim is to kickstart the market for aviation biofuel in the Nordic region. Partners currently include Swedavia, EFS, KLM, SAS and BRA that finance the administration of the fund. Corporate clients, currently include Löfbergs, Resia, Swedavia, Norrlandsfonden and Crip, pay an annual fee whereas donations are accepted from private consumers. 75 percent of the proceeds is used to purchase sustainable aviation biofuel and 25 percent is used to support the development of large-scale commercial production of aviation biofuel in the Nordic region.
