In the United States (US), Graanul Invest Woodville Pellet, a subsidiary of Estonia-headed wood pellet producer AS Graanul Invest has announced an important milestone in logistics efficiency with the loading of its first supra-sized vessel.

Europe’s largest and the world’s third-largest wood pellet producer, Graanul Invest is a leading producer of biomass and bioenergy.

The group operates twelve modern wood pellet plants located in the Baltic States and the United States (US) and six renewable combined heat and power (CHP) plants in Estonia and Latvia.

A few days before Christmas, pellets produced by the Graanul Invest Woodville facility began loading onboard the MS Nemea at the Group’s logistics hub in Port Arthur, Texas (TX).

A total of 50 042 tonnes of wood pellets were loaded onto the vessel for its transatlantic crossing to the Port of Immingham in the UK where it is expected to arrive in mid-January.

We are proud to set a new milestone in loading capacity and fuel efficiency. It is equally important for our customers and us to achieve the minimal possible fossil carbon footprint for our wood pellets. With larger shipments, we can raise the fuel efficiency per tonne of shipped pellets remarkably, commented Jason Ansley, VP of Graanul Invest US operations.

The MS Nemea is 199.9 m long and 32.4 m wide with a maximum load capacity of 61 300 DWT.

I would like to thank our partner Drax for being flexible as the shift from handy-size vessels to supra-size required some preparations and was not without its challenges. Larger shipments are a crucial milestone for us towards improving the best-of-the-class logistics efficiency even further. Graanul Invest’s mission is to be the most reliable provider of sustainable biofuel, and we are well prepared to fulfill all the contracted shipments to our customers despite hectic times in energy markets, Jason Ansley said.

Graanul Invest’s largest ever wood pellet shipment was 61 778 tonnes in 2021, transported from Muuga, Estonia, also to the UK.
